* The sale of contemporary art at modern York's Phillips, de Pury & Luxembourg in its recently made known downtown location was a hit, as the auction house sold 38 of 42 fates offered, or more than 90 percent for a total of $116 million. "The compass had a great energy and feel" proprietor Simon de Pury said. The top division was a graffiti painting through Cy Twombly, "Untitled (Bolsena)" (1969) which sold for $19 million, well below its $25 million presale estimate. The same anonymous buyer won "Jackie (Two Works)" (1964) by way of Andy Warhol, which sold for $383600 just below the presale gentle estimate of $400,000. Other highlights included "Back Light" (2000) from East German figurative painter Neo Rauch, which sold for $196500 (est $100000 to $150000) setting a fresh auction record for the artist.
