"Splat bound Pow!" chronicles three generations of contemporary visual artists who have used the images and techniques of cartoons to examine contemporary issues. The exhibition is organized in three sections, including "Splat: Squashing the Force Field of Pop" "Boom: The Eruption of Mt Mythomania and the Spewing of Alter-egos" and "Pow!: Transforming the Language of Art with Alien Technology." These themes are meant to carry the viewer within three generations of artists by means of providing evidence of the cultural and social changes that have taken place in the world since 1960
"The pervasive use of cartoons in contemporary art is more than coincidental," said associate curator Valeri Cassel. "It's a cultural phenomenon that warrants a greater understanding of in what way our society as a whole absorbed change in the latter half of the 20th hundred years Through the use of cartoons--their imagery, techniques and mythology--the artists featured in this exhibition engage their audiences in a dialog forward issues ranging from war, urban decay, economic disenfranchisement, identity and isolationism."
"Splat rush Pow!" is accompanied by a abundantly illustrated catalog.
